I suppose the largest is taking yourself for the most part off the grid and not having to pay for electricity anymore.
That might be a nice savings but solar systems are so costly..even with incentives that its largely beyond the reach of your average home owner.
The sun is Free and sufficient, at least for now…until the government finds a way to tax it like everything else.
The only main use of power in a home that would probably strain your electrical use would be Air Conditioning.
Another advantage is that in some places you can sell back the energy that you produce to the local utility, but I hear in some area’s that is being restricted too due to the economy and tighter requirements on the energy produced.

It’s free…
…until the government finds a way of charging you for the sunlight they let you have.

Solar energy is free – it needs no fuel and produces no waste or pollution.
In sunny countries, solar power can be used where there is no easy way to get electricity to a remote place.
Handy for low-power uses such as solar powered garden lights and battery chargers

They generate money for the enconomy
They make you feel all warm and fuzzy
They can power a light bulb when there is no conventional power supply (in combination with a battery system)
They generate free electricity once the initial outlay has been recovered
They produce clean power once the co2 generated during manufacture and transporation has been offset
