Wind Power
What is wind power?
Wind power is electricity harnessed from the wind, usually by using wind turbines.
How do wind turbines work?
Wind spins the blades of the wind turbine, which in turn spins a generator that turns the kinetic (movement) energy into electricity.
Why should you use a wind turbine?
- Unlike solar panels, wind turbines can produce power when the sun is not shining (i.e. at night).
What to think about when considering wind power.
- Most wind turbines are quite high. This means they are generally not suitable for city environments. However, smaller wind turbines can be roof-mounted while still providing electricity.
- For wind turbines to be effective you need to live in a windy area, with average wind speeds of about 18 km (11 miles) per hour.
